Design of low-temperature asphalt mixtures

In this diplomatic work, the issue of low-temperature asphalts and binders for asphalt mixtures is solved. Diploma work is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part of diploma work, the purpose was to process a overview of technologies that allow the reduction of working temperature in the production and laying of asphalt mixtures. The purpose of the practical part was to comparison the functional parameters of two types of asphalt mixtures made in two variants, with the common asphalt binder and adding licomont into asphalt. Attention was given to stiffness, wheel drive tests and low temperature parameters.
Usage of foam bitumen technology

The diploma thesis deals with the production of warm mix asphalts, using the foam bitumen technology. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part is focused on the basic division of roadway constructions, particularly on warm mix asphalts. The aim of the practical part was to find out whether the produced asphalt mixture retains its functional properties when the operating temperature is reduced. For this purpose, two asphalt mixtures of the ACO 11+ type at operating temperature of 150 °C and reduced operating temperature of 130 °C were made. Functional tests and empirical and functional tests were carried out on the produced asphalt mixtures and the extracted bitumen binders respectively. In the conclusion of the thesis, the results of the tests are mutually compared.

The diploma thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part is mainly focused on methods for reducing the working temperature in the production of hot mix asphalt and the main reasons for this. Most attention is paid to the warm mix asphalt, mainly foam asphalt technology. In practical part are describes working procedures of individual tests on asphalt mixtures and recovered bitumen binders. The tests were performed on 3 types of ACO 11+, one was made with working temperature 160°C without foamed bitumen and the other two with foamed bitumen,one with working temperature 160°C and the second 140°C. Then were the results compared.

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to describe the issue of foam bitumen technology in the production and paving of asphalt mixtures. The first chapter is devoted to the contexts needed to understand the issues of reducing production temperatures and the use of warm mix asphalt (WMA), especially foamed bitumen. The second chapter is aimed to understand the concept of warm mix asphalt and explains the production technology of foamed bitumen and the asphalt foam properties. The penultimate and most comprehensive chapter is an overview of commercial products, practices and experience with foamed bitumen abroad, where WMA technologies are more widespread. The results of these studies show that foaming processes, as well as other types of WMA, are more ecological equivalent to commonly used hot mix asphalt. The last chapter summarizes the experience in the Czech Republic and its technical standards of foamed bitumen technology.

Evaluation of self-healing in concrete by means of analytical techniques

In the present work, the self-healing process in concrete was evaluated using analytical techniques. For this purpose, two concrete mixes of different composition (one used as reference) were prepared with a W/B of 0.45. The self-healing process was triggered by the introduction in the concrete mix of a commercial expansive admixture (calcium sulfo-aluminate), two dicarboxylic acids, and sodium carbonate salt. After 28 days curing in water, the specimens were artificially cracked (crack width ≈ 400 μm) and then again water-cured for 40 days until self-healing occurred. The progress of self-healing was investigated with a stereo-microscope at 40, 50 and 60 days. The efficiency of the process was evaluated using micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray micro-computed tomography (XmCT). Significant reduction in the crack width was observed as a result of filling the crack with calcite generated during the self-healing process. In some cases, the crack was completely healed. The experimental methodology used provided new insights into the evolution of the self-healing phenomenon in concrete.
